Nominated for an Academy Award, Stranger at the Gate was executive produced by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and directed by Joshua Seftel. As the lead producer on the project from prep through production and post, the Academy nominated me for an Oscar. A prize winner at the 2022 Tribeca Festival and nominee for the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, Stranger at the Gate is distributed by The New Yorker as part of the magazine’s award-winning New Yorker Documentary series.
The film tells the true story of the U.S. Marine Richard (Mac) McKinney. After twenty-five years of service, McKinney is filled with hatred for Muslims plots to bomb an Indiana mosque. When he comes face to face with the immigrants who he seeks to kill, the story takes a shocking twist toward compassion, grace, and forgiveness.
“This film is a powerful true story of forgiveness and redemption,” said Malala Yousafzai. “I am honored to support the filmmakers and everyone in Muncie who shared their incredible stories. I hope the film challenges every viewer to question their assumptions and show kindness to everyone they meet.”
